Doug Pederson Following Andy Reid's 'Formula'

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Caution: You may experience déjà vu.

New Philadelphia Eagles' head coach Doug Pederson has followed former Eagles' head coach Andy Reid around his entire career -- from Reid's backup QB with the Eagles in '99 to his quarterbacks coach with the Chiefs the past three seasons.

Pederson isn't keeping it a secret either. In fact, he's taking Reid's philosophy with him.

"That's the one thing coach said," Pederson told CSN's and 94WIP's Reuben Frank. "'Listen, make sure your quarterback is right, No. 1. Get pass rushers on defense and tackles on offense and get you a couple corners, and then everybody else you just kind of fill in.' That's the truth. To me, that's the formula."

Quarterback, the most important position, is the cloudiest for the Eagles. The team must decide on last year's starter Sam Bradford, who is set to become a free-agent on March 9th if not franchised or re-signed.

Then there's backup Mark Sanchez, who is under contract, but certainly not a lock to be on the 2016 roster. The Eagles would save $3.5 million on their cap by releasing Sanchez.

Of course, there are unexciting veteran free-agent options in Nick Foles and Chase Daniel -- both of whom have been linked to the Eagles -- and an exciting option in Robert Griffin III, who has not.

And then there's the draft. With the No. 13 overall pick, the Eagles could look to snag a top QB in the first-round of this year's draft. Pederson says, if they do indeed go that route, that player would likely sit and learn in year one.

"My personal feeling? Unless you need a guy, shelve him for a year," Pederson told Frank. "Shelve him for a year. And let him get in your system and let him grow if you've got a guy in place already that he can kind of learn from."
