5 Veterans QB's Who Could Be The Eagles' 2016 Starter
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Sure, they could start a rookie.
But from everything we're hearing, they're 13th overall draft slot, and Jeffrey Lurie's seemingly impatient attitude, a rookie QB starting Week 1 seems somewhat unlikely.
So, who's going to be the guy? Here are five veteran options.
5. Sam Bradford
Last year's starter, Sam Bradford, is obviously still in play. Bradford, 28, can be tagged or signed until March 9th when he hits the free agent market. According to a report, the Eagles will at least let Bradford test the market.
4. Mark Sanchez
Oh no.
This seems less likely than Bradford, but in reality, Sanchez is under contract and Bradford is not. And if the Eagles decide to let Bradford walk and draft a quarterback, your Week 1 2016 starting QB can certainly be Sanchez.
For what it's worth, Sanchez has a $5.5 million cap hit and the Eagles can save $3.5 million if they release him.
3. Nick Foles
Double, oh no. Not our ex-girlfriend!
It has already been reported that Doug Pederson is interested in Foles and that makes me nauseous. The only explanation I can come up with is Pederson didn't watch the Rams play last season. Foles was benched for CASE KEENUM! He stinks!
What am I taking crazy pills?
2. Chase Daniel
Another report indicates Pederson views Daniel as "more than a backup," which essentially equates to: Doug Pederson views Chase Daniel as a starter, which essentially equates to: THE EAGLES ARE DOOMED.
Daniel, 29, was undrafted in 2009 has virtually zero NFL experience.
1. Robert Griffin III
RGIII is my guy. And hear me out before you laugh in my proverbial internet face.
- He's going to be released - Washington saves all of $16.155 million on their 2016 cap by releasing him.
- He's young - 26-years-old
- He's talented - Heavily recruited out of high school, 2011 Heisman Trophy winner, No. 2 overall pick in 2012, can crush defenses with his arm and legs, plus he already had two amazing NFL seasons where he threw for over 3,200 yards in both of them and averaged 600 more rushing.
- He's desperate - RGIII needs the Eagles and the Eagles need RGIII. A franchise in turmoil and a QB in turmoil = a match made in heaven.
- He's cheap - You can sign RGIII to an incentive-based, cap friendly short-term deal and make him prove his worth.
- He's mentally tough - Adversity reveals and build character. After dealing with injuries and seeing his career take a downward turn, the media tried to destroy the kid and he just took it. Punch after punch, RGIII took the hits. And he kept quiet all season long while Kirk Cousins led Washington the playoffs. I respect that.
Worst case scenario? He gets hurt or he stinks. Big deal? Then you cut him. And even if that happens it could --- unintentionally --- lead you to the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft and DeShaun Watson.
