In this week’s That Thing You Missed watch the Twins pull an epic March Madness prank on Mike Pelfrey, Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg’s lack of dancing prowess go viral and what just might be the worst answer to a sports question ever.
Manhood in Jeopardy?
Listen, not everyone is a sports fan. I get it. I’m not sure why but there are actually folks out there who don’t love to sit around all weekend eating, drinking beer and watching teams compete.
Mystifies me. Hey, to each his own.
However, when Alex Trebek posed this clue on Jeopardy: “100 plus assists in an NHL season has been accomplished only 13 times, 11 times by this player” and the guy answers “who is Magic Johnson?” Well, now that’s just pathetic. It’s not even the right sport.
I mean anyone who knows basic trivia could have gotten that answer right. Even Trebek’s “oh no” reaction is dripping with disdain.
And, adding insult to injury, he was beaten out by a girl.
He’s really going to take a ribbing at next Tuesday night’s sewing circle.
Dance Like Everyone’s Watching
March Madness encompasses everything we love about sports; amazing talent, hard work, passion and embarrassing video clips.
After beating North Carolina in a thrilling game during the third round of the NCAA Tourney, Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg decided to do a little rug cutting in the Cyclones locker room, proving once again white men may be able to jump…but they can’t dance.
Video of the awkward celebration went viral and Hoiberg sent a tweet to his daughter Paige apologizing. Paige responded that she didn’t “currr” and became a Twitter sensation.
This Cinderella story doesn’t end there.
Prom season is right around the corner so one clever guy decided to use Paige’s recent social media fame to get himself a date to the other Big Dance this Spring. He used YouTube and Twitter to post his singing “promposal.”
Turns out, he’s not any regular Joe either, Hoiberg’s suitor just so happens to be the son of Iowa State’s football coach.
That video also went viral, and let’s just say, Paige’s potential prom date croons worse than Coach Hoiberg dances.
Thank G-d these kids have athletic genes. You can check out the video here.
In case you were wondering, despite the horrible voice, she said yes.
This Pep Talk’s A Shocker

And what good is March Madness if you can’t use the tourney to pull a prank or two? Especially when that prank is being played on Mike Pelfrey of the Minnesota Twins.
Twins management told Pelfrey, who is a Wichita State grad, the (then) undefeated Shockers needed a superstar like himself to help pump the team up. Manager Ron Gardenhire placed the call and encouraged Pelfrey to give them a pep talk.
However, the only team on the other end was the other Twins’ players in the clubhouse ten feet away.
Let’s just say the speech wasn’t exactly inspiring. Pelfrey’s reaction when he learns the truth? Priceless.
As you know, Wichita State lost to Kentucky.
Maybe they were on the other line after all.
If you Google the term “adult rec league hockey” you’ll get a lot of information about fun, exercise, sportsmanship and healthy competition.
For those of us in the know, it’s really about the post-game happy hour. Seriously, it’s not called “beer league hockey” for the camaraderie.
In this case, however, it looks like one referee hit happy hour a bit too hard before the actual game. Or, perhaps he just has vertigo.
Either way, see what you non-rinkrat types are missing out on?
