Carjacking Suspect Arrested After Leading Philadelphia Police On Wild Chase
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- New information has been released about a man accused of taking police for a wild ride Monday night. It was a terrifying night involving stolen cars, a chase, and crashes.
Investigators say it was an intense situation with a lot of moving parts and they are thankful no one else was hurt.
Police say it all started as a robbery at a Kia dealership in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
They say it then turned into a police chase and then a carjacking where the suspect pulled a woman out of a Lexus. Along the way, the suspect even hit cars, including a police cruiser.
The incident happened on South 57th and Arch Streets around 11:30 p.m. Police say an officer from the 18th District was attempting to stop a Chevrolet Malibu with lights and a siren that was wanted in a previous carjacking, but the vehicle rammed into his police car and then fled on 57th Street. The officer is currently at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in stable condition.
Not long after, police were able to catch up to the man when he ditched the stolen car and ran.
Investigators identified the man as 30-year-old Samuel Ferraro and say he was arrested and taken to the hospital.
"Very dangerous person and it's fortunate the woman wasn't injured, and police weren't injured," Capt. John Ryan said.
Ryan says a carjacking at a dealership is rare.
"We don't see that too often, although we do have people that are selling their cars on Facebook Marketplace and they are being robbed at the point of sale with whoever they arrange to meet," Ryan said.
He says drivers for delivery and rideshare services are being targeted the most and wants everyone to be on the lookout.
"Most of what we are seeing, there's a lot of delivery drivers at risk, Uber Eats. People who leave their cars running which occurs all winter long. I mean, that's a problem," Ryan said.
Police say they're working to see if anyone else is involved in the incident and are working with Cherry Hill police on the investigation.
