Delaware's New Expungement Law Is Now In Effect
WILMINGTON, Del. (CBS/AP) — A new law is now in effect in Delaware that will help people get certain charges and convictions expunged from their record. State officials reportedly discussed the new law at a fair in Wilmington on Saturday.
The Delaware Adult Expungement Reform Act was signed into law by Gov. John Carney in June. Senator Darius J. Brown sponsored the bill, which is designed to help people get back on their feet and remove obstacles to getting a job or finding a place to live.
The law expunges charges for which a person was not found guilty. It also expunges isolated misdemeanors once a petition has been filed with the State Bureau of Investigation.
Other charges can be expunged at a judge's discretion with input from both the Delaware Department of Justice and victims.
More serious crimes may require a pardon.
