College Basketball Player Injured In South Philly Shooting Following Drexel Game

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A college basketball player and another teen are recovering after being shot outside an apartment building in South Philadelphia.

Towson University identified the 24-year-old as basketball student athlete, John Davis. The Philadelphia native was in town for a weekend road trip against Drexel on Saturday.

Following the game, Davis remained in Philadelphia for a family function.

"John stayed back in Philadelphia Saturday night for the dedication of the birth of his son, Bryson Hunter Davis Harris," said head coach Pat Skerry. "He was outside of his family home when a car drove by and opened fire.  We are extremely thankful that John, and everybody else involved, was not seriously harmed.  Our main focus right now is on the health of John Davis."

Davis was treated for a gunshot wound and released from the hospital. Towson said his status for the remainder of the basketball season is still being determined.

It happened outside the Riverview Apartments on South 4th Street near Washington Avenue.

Police say a group of teens was hanging out in the parking lot when someone fired several shots from the street.

One teen was struck in the leg.

So far, there is no word on any suspects.
