Sixers Fall In Double Overtime To Grizzlies 104-99
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Marc Gasol scored 27 points, Mike Conley had 25 and the Memphis Grizzlies beat the Philadelphia 76ers 104-99 in double overtime on Wednesday night for their sixth straight victory.
Conley added nine rebounds and nine assists for the Grizzlies, who came back from an 11-point, second-half deficit for their eighth consecutive win against Philadelphia.
Ersan Ilyasova had 22 points and 12 rebounds for Philadelphia, which was looking for its first three-game winning streak in nearly three years.
Rookie center Joel Embiid had 12 points and 11 rebounds but didn't play in the second overtime. Embiid is on a minutes restriction after missing the last two seasons with a foot injury. He finished with 27 minutes.
Zach Randolph scored the first four points of the second overtime to give Memphis a 95-91 lead. After Jerryd Bayless made a pair of free throws, Gasol came up big on Memphis' ensuing possession by getting an offensive rebound and then finishing a dunk.
Philadelphia got within 99-96 with 1:58 left on Ilyasova's free throw after Gasol was whistled for a technical and cut it to 99-98 after Bayless' layup with 23 seconds remaining. Conley's two free throws pushed Memphis' lead back to three and Philadelphia never got closer.
The 76ers' last three-game winning streak came Dec. 29, 2013-Jan. 4, 2014. Philadelphia had chances to win in both regulation and the first overtime.
The teams were a combined 1 for 11 from the field in the first OT before Randolph put Memphis ahead 91-88 with 49 seconds left when he converted over Embiid on a drive. Bayless tied it with a 3 from the top of the key with 43 seconds left before Conley's turnover gave Philadelphia the ball back.
Bayless misfired on a midrange shot that would've won it, and Embiid couldn't convert on a baseline jumper after an inbounds play with 1.3 seconds left.
The Grizzlies surged into the lead in the fourth quarter. With Embiid on the bench, Memphis turned an eight-point deficit into a six-point lead by outscoring Philadelphia 19-5 over the first eight minutes of the period.
Embiid returned with 3:40 left and, with his help, Philadelphia slowly cut into the lead before Nik Stauskas tied the game at 85 with 1:01 to play on a corner 3-pointer.
Gasol's corner 3 with 3 seconds left rimmed out and Philadelphia got the ball to Embiid for a final shot, but his over-the-head try went off the backboard.
