Christie's Role In Trump Transition Reduced As Post-Bridgegate Problems Mount
TRENTON, N.J. (CBS) - New Jersey Governor Chris Christie's star may be fading a little within the circle of close advisors to President-elect Trump.
And back at home, pressure is mounting against him in the wake of the Bridgegate verdict last week.
Christie is now a vice-chair of the Trump Transition, which is how headed by Vice President-elect Mike Pence. Word of Christie taking a high profile post within the administration is starting to diminish.
And while that's playing out, State Senator Loretta Weinberg, who has pressed the Assembly Speaker to begin impeachment proceedings against Christie, is taking thing to the next level.
"I also sent FOIA requests to both the FBI and the Department of Justice asking for any records that either agency has concerning the US Attorney's investigation with Governor Christie.," Weinberg told KYW Newsradio.
She argues the Bridgegate trial brings into question Christie's ongoing insistence he was unaware of the political motivations behind the lane closures at the George Washington Bridge 3 years ago until press reports brought it to light.
"There is a lot of information which should be examined," Weinberg said, "and the Governor can get on national TV and re-spin this any way he wants but it's not accurate."
The Senator also apologized to Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto for making her request for impeachment proceedings in the form of a press release sent out late Thursday afternoon. Prieto says he is "weighing all potential legislative activity."
A spokesman for the Governor labeled Weinberg's request "ridiculous."
