Philadelphia School Kids Being Dismissed Early Due To Heat

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A sweltering forecast is causing the first early dismissal of Philadelphia's young school year.

School Closings And Early Dismissals

The school year only began two days ago, but with temperatures heading up to the mid-90s today, the Philadelphia School District has decided to close schools at noon today.

District spokesman Lee Whack says, "We're doing early dismissal just to ensure that with the high temperatures that we get students home and safe. And make sure we do that before it gets even hotter in the afternoon."

Whack says about 60 percent of Philadelphia schools have air conditioning, so the decision was made to dismiss early, even if it is September.

All after-school activities and Public League sports are called off for the day.

The district provides transportation for Archdiocese schools in the city, so they will close at noon as well. Catholic schools in the suburbs usually follow the decision of their local school boards.
