PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — China’s Ambassador Consul General was in Philadelphia Wednesday to talk business opportunities during an event held at the Union League.

Zhang Qiyue, who is based out of New York and has been part of the diplomatic service for the People’s Republic of China for some 40 years, says it’s a new world of opportunity for the Chinese people and for Philadelphia.

“Our hope is to get the Chinese business leaders, as well as the local business leaders, to get together to get to know each other more,” she said. “So from that friendship and good understanding, we hope that some projects of cooperation can be born.”

The ambassador says contrary to a lot of the political rhetoric about the threat China poses to the American economy – the opposite is true.

“So when we’re talking about trade, it’s not about just losing jobs,” Qiyue said. “It’s about creating jobs. I think that’s important to understand.”

She adds China is looking at Philadelphia and its innovators as potential partners.
