Holiday Movie Season: A Sneak Preview

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- As August 2016 proceeds and the summer movie season closes down, many moviegoers tire of the parade of explosive thrillers and begin to anticipate the late-in-the-year lineup, when subject matter tends to change in a more serious and thoughtful direction and audiences skew somewhat older.

That's when the movie landscape seems less dominated by the comic book universe, sequels are not as plentiful, and Oscar season begins in earnest.

So what's headed our way during the holiday season, from right before Thanksgiving until the end of the calendar year?

Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone co-star in a musical romantic dramedy about the relationship between a jazz musician and an aspiring actress in the Los Angeles-set La La Land.

Jason Bateman, Jennifer Aniston, and Kate McKinnon are involved in a holiday gathering that gets out of hand in the land-a-client comedy, Office Christmas Party.

Will Smith, Kate Winslet, Keira Knightley, and Helen Mirren team up in a surreal workplace drama about a New York advertising executive who spirals downward in Collateral Beauty.

Warren Beatty writes, directs, and portrays eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes, who disapproves of a romantic relationship involving two of his employees, in the romantic dramedy set in Hollywood in the fifties, Rules Don't Apply.

Rebels undertake a mission to steal plans for the Death Star in an action-adventure fantasy that spins off from THE action-adventure fantasy, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, and Jeremy Irons lead the cast in an action-adventure fantasy based on the video game franchise about a secret society in Assassin's Creed.

Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt co-star in a science fiction thriller that involves a malfunction in the sleep chambers of a spacecraft in Passengers.

Scarlett Johansson, Matthew McConaughey, and Reese Witherspoon head the voice cast of an animated family comedy involving a koala-hosted musical competition in a world of only animals in Sing.

Carla Gugino, Gary Oldman, Asa Butterfield, and Britt Robertson star in a science fiction drama about a young man who returns from Mars to find his father on Earth in The Space Between Us.

Brad Pitt stars as a French-Canadian spy and Marion Cotillard plays the French agent and possible Nazy spy whom he marries in the World War II-set romantic drama, Allied.

Dwayne Johnson provides the lead voice of a legendary demi-god in the animated adventure comedy set on the ancient island of Oceania in the South Pacific in Moana.

Billy Bob Thornton returns as the cynical, Santa Claus-impersonating title character in the holiday black-comedy sequel, Bad Santa 2.

Bryan Cranston plays a protective father and James Franco the objectionable young man his daughter falls for and brings home in the anyone-but-this-guy comedy, Why Him?

Matthew McConaughey and Bryce Dallas Howard search for riches in the uncharted Indonesian jungle in the glittering thriller, Gold.

Denzel Washingon directs and stars opposite Viola Davis in the fifties family drama based on the August Wilson play, Fences.

Kate Beckinsale stars as the mother of a young son coping with scary problems in the attic of their rural home in the horror thriller, The Disappointments Room.

And Eddie Redmayne stars as a writer telling tales of witches and wizards in the Harry Potter fantasy spinoff, Fantastic Beats and Where to Find Them.
