As DNC Kicks Off, A Party Leadership Change Tops Headlines

By Tim Jimenez

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Democratic National Convention kicks off today. And it begins with controversy: Leaked emails leading to the resignation of party chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

Donna Brazile wanted to emphasize this morning she's not in charge of the Democratic Party just yet. That happens Friday when Debbie Wasserman Shultz's resignation is effective.

She steps down after thousands of party emails were leaked, some seem to support claims from Bernie Sanders supporters that the Party backed Hillary all the way.

Brazile says she addressed the mess with those loyal to Sanders.

"I met with his delegates and I told them on behalf of the party I want to apologize for the salacious and insensitive, very mean spirited emails that were referenced to in Wikileaks."

She says she doesn't believe the controversy will cause a chaotic nomination at the convention. And when asked about Donald Trump's claim their process was rigged for Hillary?

"Our system is open, fair and accessible to all Americans."
