Juan Williams: Trump Has Turned GOP 'On Its Head'

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Cable news commentator Juan Williams discussed his new book, We The People, and the 2016 Presidential election, expressing amazement at Donald Trump's performance in becoming the Republican nominee for President.

Williams told Dom Giordano on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT that he never though Trump could accomplish anything close to what he has done so far.

"I never thought Donald Trump would win the nomination, so my hat's off to Donald Trump. He has, to my mind, gone up against the GOP establishment and beaten them. That's quite a trip because there's a lot of money in the GOP establishment and he has totally turned GOP orthodoxies on policy on its head."

Regarding his book, Williams said he thinks the Founding Fathers might not like the America that is currently in place.

"Everybody would want to know, what do you guys think of America today? But, I think they'd be stunned. Clearly, if they go down Broad Street, they'd say what are all these cameras on the light posts? You'd say for red light runners and crime. They'd say, you mean the government has got you under surveillance constantly? They would be a little stunned at the America we live in and the question would be who created the America we live in today?"

Williams also discussed the changing perceptions of the military, comparing public opinion today with the Vietnam era.

"You go to a ball game today and any mention of our military, our veterans, people stand and applaud. The most trusted institution in America today, at a time when, Wall Street, nobody trusts, the athletes with steroids, the church, everybody knows about the scandals, even the media, but you get to the military, the number institution in America across all political lines, racial lines, anything you want, men and women. We love the military. Why is that? Because if you think back to Vietnam, the military was down low, seen as deteriorating."
