PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia's Archbishop has been asked by the Eternal Word Television Network to play a key part in the funeral for its founder who died on Easter Sunday.
Archbishop Charles Chaput has been named the principal celebrant for the funeral Mass for Mother Mary Angelica, foundress of EWTN, on Friday at 11 a.m., in the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Hanceville, Alabama.
"For a long time the archbishop has served as member of the board for EWTN and sees her as a remarkable figure in the church," said Father Dennis Gill, director of the Philadelphia Archdiocese office for divine worship, who says Chaput has been an ardent supporter of Mother Angelica's work.
Chaput is on retreat and could not be reached.
Gill says the archdiocese will also honor Mother Angelica during a special Mass on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., in the cathedral chapel in Philadelphia.
"Everyone in the Delaware Valley is invited to come to join themselves to the offering of Christ for her soul," said Gill.
