PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Author and former political adviser to Donald Trump, Roger Stone, denied having planted a story in the National Enquirer alleging that Texas Senator and presidential candidate Ted Cruz has engaged in numerous extra-marital affairs.

Stone, in an interview with Rich Zeoli on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT, rejected the charges against him and said if he did do something like this, the evidence would not lead back to him.

“Ted Cruz has as much proof that I planted this story, because I didn’t, as there is proof of his dalliances with various women. Let’s think about this for a moment, if, in fact, I planted this, and I have planted stories like this in my political past, why would I be quoted in the story on the record, leaving a big, old thumb print? When have I ever done that?..Why would I make it obvious by having myself quoted? I’m a lot of things, but stupid is not one of them.”

However, he insisted that, while nothing came from him, he has heard rumors about Cruz’s alleged affairs in conversations around Washington.

“The truth is, when the National Enquirer called me about this story, they had information regarding two additional women that I was unaware of, but everybody in the political class knows that the Washington Post and Associated Press and other news organizations have been actively pursuing these leads and for Cruz to blame Trump is a cheap shot. Trump knows nothing of this. I never discussed it with Donald. I’ve never discussed it with anyone in his campaign.”

Stone claims Cruz is attempting to blame the story on Donald Trump and his supporters in order to distract voters from an explosive scandal.

“This is just an attempt to deflect, deflect from the issues in question. There’s a now a dozen reporters out chasing this. It’s not over until it’s over. Lets see where this story goes.”
