New Hampshire Primary Could Be Pivotal For Chris Christie

MANCHESTER, N.H., (CBS) -- New Hampshire is a state already known for high primary participation.

"New Hampshire does have a reputation for being a hyper-political state because there's an election every year," said Ward 2 Moderator Nicholl Marshall.

State officials say turnout on Tuesday could be a record-setter. 84-year-old Yvonne Wheeler says she's been voting in the primary every four years since she's been allowed to vote. "I want to live in a country that I'm voting for and if I don't vote , I don't have any right to say something about them," Wheeler said.

For 18 and 20-year-old friends, Yanibel Reys Santos and Kiara Escalera, this was their first time voting. "My mom told me I had to vote," said Reys Santos when asked why she came out. Escalera said it was "a lot of my friends on social media, a lot of friends texting me and telling me go out, go vote, go make a difference."

In the country's first primary, voters here may further narrow the fields, helping to decide which candidate should represent each party. On the democratic side, Senator Bernie Sanders, from neighboring Vermont, is expected to come out on top.

Republican businessman Donald Trump has been leading in the Granite State for months.

Wheeler said she voted for Dr. Ben Carson, but says no matter who ultimately wins the nominations, she is just glad people young and old are making their voices heard.

"This is their country, this is their heritage that people are fooling with and that's not right. They have to have a vote and if they don't, sorry for them."

It was down to the wire for candidates on Tuesday. With hours to go, presidential hopefuls and their campaigns used every moment to try to persuade voters.

One Bernie Sanders supporter says she made her decision at literally the very last minute and one Chris Christie supporter said he made his mind up after watching Saturday night's debate.

New Hampshire is being regarded as a potential make it or break it state for the Governor candidates, including Christie. On Monday, Christie said that he has not thought about what he will do if he has a poor showing in New Hampshire.

Christie will be holding an event tonight after the polls close in New Hampshire.
