Restaurant Throws Server Surprise 90th Birthday Party
WESTHAMPTON, N.J. (CBS) -- A restaurant chain in South Jersey celebrated the birthday of one of its waitresses with a big surprise party Tuesday complete with cake, balloons and gifts. "I'm very surprised. I didn't expect all this!" said Katherine Walsh.
Walsh , who turned 90 Tuesday, has been a waitress at the Applebee's on Burlington-Mount Holly Road in Westampton, New Jersey for 13 years. Her co-workers describe her as a friend; her regulars say she's pleasant and her bosses speak of her work ethic.
"We're Apple American Group, we operate restaurants in 27 states across the country and have about 40,000 employees and she's the oldest," said Director of Operations Ed Guidotti. "She makes everybody feels welcome."
"She gets excited for everybody else, so this is really neat that someone got excited for her," said one of Walsh's regulars, Madeline Horchak of Delran, New Jersey.
Walsh tells Eyewitness News she's still working because she enjoys it and because the money comes in handy and has no plans to retire.
"I'm part of life, I'm not just sitting there," Walsh said. "I have a purpose, I enjoy it."
