Five Shows To See This January In Philadelphia

By Michael Cerio

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- So this is the new year. You've finally stopped reeking of Korbel, you haven't touched chocolate in like five days, and that garage is just about organized. Minus a frustrating Making A Murderer binge delay, I'd say 2016 is off to a great start.

As long as you're bettering yourself, don't forget your ears. These are five shows worth checking out this January in Philadelphia.

Tuesday January 19th and Wednesday January 20th – G-Eazy at The Fillmore

G-Eazy blasted back with a batch of strutting, grimey, hook-heavy hip hop last month on his sophomore album When It's Dark Out. People sat up and took notice as he's popped up everywhere from the top of Billboard charts to ESPN since, raising the profile of this already stylish Oakland MC. He hits The Fillmore for two nights with A$AP Ferg.

Saturday January 23rd – Alessia Cara at The TLA

Nineteen-year-old Alessia Cara was a nice surprise for 2015. With a smoky silk voice, Cara crafted the ultimate anti-party anthem of the year with "Here", and dropped her debut Know-It-All in November. She's been earmarked for big things, and it's probably best to see her in the intimacy of The TLA while you still can.

Saturday January 23rd and Sunday January 24th – Macklemore And Ryan Lewis at The Tower Theater

"Downtown" is the first taste of new music from Macklemore And Ryan Lewis since the massive success of 2012's The Heist. Over four months later and it's still some of the most fun you can have with your ears. The album from which it comes is still untitled and without a release date. Will they go Yonce on you with a sneak attack album drop? Perhaps. In the meantime, the Seattle crew takes over The Tower Theater for two nights of tag poppin'.

Saturday January 30th – Jack's Mannequin at Electric Factory

Andrew McMahon has worn many musical hats - from the band Something Corporate to his latest success with Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness. His best incarnation though is his band Jack's Mannequin and their thoughtful, personal, and rich debut Everything In Transit. McMahon celebrates ten years of the album with an anniversary show this month at Electric Factory.

Sunday January 31st – Muse at Wells Fargo Center

The power of Muse may have diminished over the past couple of years, but they are still one of the biggest bands in the world – and if anything more ferocious then ever. The militant aggression of last year's Drones album didn't hit the masses quite like previous efforts, but it is built to rattle around the ribs of those in the last row of an arena. The thumping veterans will close out the month with a little help from Jeep enthusiast openers X Ambassadors.
