Runners Gather In South Philly, Raising Money For Charity, Honoring The Life Of A Local Man

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A group of about 150 people spent Sunday morning in FDR Park, in South Philadelphia, raising money for those less fortunate, while honoring a beloved man.

25-year-old Kevan Issacs had a big heart for people who were in great need.  He suddenly died in 2013 and his family decided to continue his legacy, by starting a charity in his name that would benefit the needy called the Pennies From Kevan Foundation.

"For the last 4 or 5 years of his life, when he was much more aware of the things going on around him,  he began to realize that there is just a tremendous need out there to help who don't have, because he did have," said Gary Issacs who is Kevan's father, and President of the Foundation.

"I mean, he would literally take his clothes off and give them to people, because he felt badly," Issacs said. "He would give his coat to people on the street."

Issac's said his son would even let people sleep in his studio apartment.

"Kevan was a very gentle soul, he was a giving person, he was very spirtual," he said.

Funds from the run benefit two city shelters: Covenant House Philadelphia and St. Francis Inn.
Ryan Birchmeier won the race and said, he plans to be back next year.

"They are doing a good thing, and I like they're giving back to what he was passionate about, and they kind of extending his life in a way."
