Tips For Transporting Your Tree This Holiday Season

By Michelle Durham

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It's a common sight at this time of year, folks packing the family into the car to go get the Christmas tree.

According to AAA Mid-Atlantic Spokesperson Jana Tidwell, statistics show there are over 25,000 debris related crashes a year and improperly secured Christmas trees are a contributing factor.

"There have been studies that show at 35 miles an hour and this tree becomes loose and falls off. It has enough power to go through the rear window of the car in front of you."

Tidwell recommends you put a blanket on the vehicle first, then place the tree on it. The top of the tree should be facing the back of the car. Make sure the tree is tied at least three points, preferably four, not only around the trunk but crisscrossed and tied again. Tidwell also advises you to make sure your vision isn't obscured by the tree.
