Blog: Radio Shack Gift Card Reimbursement

By Jim Donovan:  Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane's office today announced that consumers holding unused gift cards purchased from RadioShack now have a way to obtain refunds.

Consumers may file claims online at www.oldradioshackgiftcard.com or call 844-794-3477.

RadioShack filed for bankruptcy earlier this year.   Attorneys with the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General's Bureau of Consumer Protection helped work toward a settlement that ensured consumers who paid for RadioShack gift cards received priority status in the bankruptcy proceedings. The settlement called for those who paid for RadioShack gift cards to receive 100 percent reimbursement.

The settlement was joined by 23 other states and the District of Columbia.

"We felt this was the best possible outcome for consumers who paid money for gift cards that would have otherwise been worthless," Attorney General Kane said.

Under a court order filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court, a trust will treat as a priority claim and pay 100 percent of the balance to consumers holding gift cards that were purchased from RadioShack, the RadioShack website or any of its authorized sellers.   Cards acquired in any other way will not be treated as a priority claim, meaning those claimants may not receive payment.

The Attorney General cautioned consumers that no one associated with this settlement would contact them to ask for personal or financial information, or to request any payment. Consumers asked for such information or payments should be wary of potential scams and refuse those requests.

Consumers with questions about the settlement may call the Office of Attorney General's Bureau of Consumer Protection at 1-800-441-2555.
