Bucks County Officials Stepping Up DUI Patrols This Thanksgiving Eve

By Jim Melwert

UPPER SOUTHAMPTON, Pa., (CBS) -- Thanksgiving Eve is traditionally a big night for bars, and Bucks County officials are announcing plans for a massive DUI patrol. The point, they say is to deter anyone from getting behind the wheel after drinking.

Matt Weintraub, with the Bucks County District Attorney's office, says the goal for this Thanksgiving Eve is zero DUI arrests. Instead, he says, they want everyone to be aware of stepped-up patrols.

"In the hopes that we deter people so that they call a cab, so they call a friend, they establish a designated driver, or they call Uber," said Weintraub.

Weintraub says 20 extra police officers will be added to the existing DUI patrols, spanning the entire Street Road corridor.

"And I want this broadcast. I want people to know we're out there enforcing. Hopefully it will deter people," said Weintraub.

Weintraub made the announcement at Veteran's Field along Street Road in Upper Southampton as it was the scene of a crash, 30 years ago.

"There was a horrific drinking and driving accident in which four of my friends were killed," he said.

Weintraub says the goal is to expand this to other holiday weekends, on other major corridors such as Routes 309 and 611.
