New Donor Mothers' Milk Bank Opens At CHOP

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's Mothers' Milk Bank opened Wednesday afternoon.

Dr. Diane Spatz, Director of the Lactation Program at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia says after months of work, CHOP has finally opened a milk bank, overseen by the Human Milk Banking Association of North America, or HMBANA.

"We are officially the 18th milk bank in the United States and the 21st milk bank in North America," said Dr. Spatz.

She says processing donor milk for babies here will better help local babies.

"For over five years now, we shipped over 120,000 ounces of milk to the milk bank in Ohio and then we had to buy it back from them."

She says HMBANA was excited for this opening in particular.

"Because they get more calls from our region than any other place in the entire United States," she said.
