Lawmakers Consider Creating Driver's License For Immigrants

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey residents who cannot prove they are in the United States legally could earn a driver's license under legislation being considered by lawmakers.

The Assembly homeland security committee is set to consider the measure Monday.

The legislation would authorize the Motor Vehicle Commission to issue a driver's license to a person who satisfies the requirements for a basic driver's license but cannot prove lawful presence in the United States.

Supporters of the measure were expected to rally in Trenton on Monday.

The legislation comes as a debate over immigration features prominently in the 2016 presidential campaign and with Gov. Chris Christie running for the Republican nomination.

Christie has indicated he supports a verification system that permits employers to check whether potential employees are authorized to work in the country.
