Weekend Box Office Report: 'Spectre' Shoots To Top
By Bill Wine
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Bond: James Bond meant office: box office over the moviegoing weekend.
Spectre, the 24th superspy adventure in the James Bond series of thrillers, with Daniel Craig in the lead role for a fourth time, earned an estimated $73-million on its weekend debut for a strong first-place finish.
Another newcomer – the animated comedy, The Peanuts Movie -- was a solid second with a total of $45-million.
Third place went to last weekend's champ, the science fiction drama, The Martian. It took in another $9-million.
Holdovers Goosebumps and Bridge of Spies, with $7-million and $6-million respectively, rounded out the top five.
Following several decidedly slow weekends at multiplexes, industry-wide totals recovered nicely and sounded an optimistic note heading into the holiday movie season.
