PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Halloween weekend was so traditionally poor at the box office, it was downright scary.

The winner by default was once again the science fiction hit, The Martian, which finished first by earning an estimated $11-million, bringing its cumulative total over the $180-million mark.

Second place went to the holdover horror comedy, Goosebumps. It took in $10-million.

The Cold War drama, Bridge of Spies, was third with $8-million.

Two other new titles also finished in the top ten, both with very modest takes.

The Bradley Cooper-starring culinary comedy, Burnt, was fifth with $5-million.

And the political comedy, Our Brand Is Crisis, with Sandra Bullock, was eighth with $3-million.

To no one’s surprise, industry-wide totals were far below those of last weekend and a year ago.
