Phillies Extend Pete Mackanin As Manager Through 2016

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Phillies have officially named Pete Mackanin as their next manager, removing the interim label and extending his contract the 2016 season with a club option for 2017, the team announced on Tuesday.

Mackanin, 64, replaced Ryne Sandberg as interim manager on June 26th. Under Mackanin, the Phillies were 30-46, including a 21-12 stretch from July 17th to August 23rd.

Before that, Mackanin was the Phillies bench coach from 2009-2012 and the third base coach in 2014 and 2015.

"The Phillies are pleased that Pete has accepted the position of manager for the 2016 season," said Andy MacPhail, the team's incoming president. "We believe that Pete is the best fit for the role. Since assuming the interim manager position in June, Pete has developed an excellent rapport with our players and has also connected well with the media and our fans. Equally as important is his eagerness to take on the challenge of rebuilding the team and further developing our players. We look forward to his contributions."

Mackanin will address the media at 5:15 p.m. E.T. Tuesday afternoon.
