Report: Blueberry Extract May Help Prevent Gum Disease

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Scientists say blueberries could be a tool for fighting gum disease.

The condition occurs when bacteria creates plaque on the teeth, causing the gums to become red and inflamed.

New research found blueberry extract may prevent plaque from forming and reduce the need for antibiotics.

According to the report, researchers say they're developing an oral device that could slowly release the extract after deep cleaning to help treat periodontitis.

The research was published in ACS' Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
