PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Hurricane season can really put a damper on getaway plans. KYW's Jay Lloyd looks at what you can expect if you've already paid for a trip to a paradise where a major storm is brewing.

Whether it's called a hurricane or a tropical storm, beach plans and getaway golf can quickly be scuttled. But what happens to deposits or up-front payments if your seashore, tropical island or cruising getaway crosses the path of a big blow.

"The individual business will work with the customer. They want them to come back, they want them to be happy," said Diane Wieland of the Cape May County Tourism Agency.

Jersey shore resorts have more flexibility, but each hotel, inn and B&B has its own cancellation policy. During storm season it's essential to know what that is. Many policies require storms to be imminent, not just a long range forecast, and some resorts will allow cancellations only when roads and airports are closed, evacuations ordered or safety is an immediate concern. For tropical island or other long distance trips and cruises, insurance is a must-buy. But understand the policy terms. They also have strict guidelines.
