By Cherri Gregg

NORWOOD, Pa. (CBS) – A police officer is recovering after he was shot overnight in Delaware County.

This happened just before 2 a.m. at the Mohawk Manor Apartments on Mohawk Drive in Norwood. Police were responding to calls that a man was suicidal and armed.

36 year old Darrel Burt of Delaware county is facing attempted murder charges.

Burt who lives on the 600 block of Mohawk, Avenue Norwood Borough in was remanded to the Delaware County Prison this afternoon after he failed to post $500,000 cash bail.

Burt was arraigned on charges of attempted murder of the first degree, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, possessing instruments of crimes, and attempted criminal homicide.

The Ridley Park Police Officer, Marc Hanly, suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and right calf. He has since been discharged from the hospital.

When officers arrived to the scene, they tried to talk to and tase the suspect, but he shot through the door, striking the officer – identified as Mark Hanly of Ridley Park Police — in the chest and leg. He was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

"He was shot in the chest and the vest saved his life," says Norwood Police Chief Mark Del Vecchio.

Police then returned fire, hitting the suspect in the elbow. Afterward, the suspect barricaded himself inside the apartment.

SWAT units were on the scene and evacuated the building. They were able to talk the suspect out of the building after about an hour.

The suspect was taken into custody and then transported to the hospital for treatment.

Del Vecchio says officer Hanly is in good spirits, and is lucky:

"Anytime you get a suicidal suspect you don't know what will happen, but the officers did everything they could."
