MERION, Pa. (CBS) —Catholic school on the Main Line that fired a teacher in a same-sex marriage has released a final media statement explaining their actions.

Margie Winters was fired from the Waldron Mercy Academy in Merion back in July.

Although school officials never said it was because of her sexual preference, they hinted at it in an email sent to parents.

The school’s decision to part ways with the teacher led many disgruntled parents to voice their anger with the academy.

Now more than a month after Winter’s firing, officials acknowledged people might disagree with their decision to fire the teacher, but they are confident that through transparent and respectful dialogue the Waldron Mercy community will continue to thrive.

They also thanked Winters for her work and said in September the school will hold meetings for parents concerning this matter.
