KYW Flashback: Montgomery County Starts Issuing Same Sex Marriage Licenses

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- Rarely, if ever, does a suburban Register of Wills make news.

But just two years ago, the Montgomery County Register hit the airwaves in a big way. KYW's Brad Segall reported that Bruce Hanes had begun issuing marriage licenses to same sex couples.

The news touched off a social tsunami across Pennsylvania, brought a demand from Governor Corbett to knock it off, and sparked a blizzard of legal actions.

Hanes didn't think the law same sex marriage ban in Pennsylvania was constitutional. Attorney General Kathleen Kane didn't either. Hanes was supported by a parade of court rulings.

Corbett backed off and declined to appeal as Pennsylvania became the 19th state to permit same-sex unions.
