Women's World Cup Brings In New Fans, More Money For Local Businesses

By Justin Udo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Vancouver, Canada is a long way from Philadelphia, but the U.S. Women's soccer team has a lot of enthusiastic fans here -- and that's helping bar owners in the city score big.

Paul Sherwin with Cavanaugh's Head House in the Society Hill section of the city says there are usually around 50 people at their bar to watch soccer games, but for these World Cup matches, they are seeing double that number.

"Business has been great," Sherwin says. "It's definitely picked up, because summertime here is slow, people go away on vacations -- but I'd say since the quarter-finals on -- the Women's World Cup games have been huge."

Sherwin says the success of the U.S. women is helping them bring in a more diverse crowd.

"Obviously we are getting a lot of new faces, definitely more woman," he says. "It's great for our business and it's great for soccer. It's just good to see."

Sherwin says fans cheer for teams from around the world, but when it comes to drinks of choice, American beers win for sure.

"Miller Light, Bud Light," he says. "American beers mostly. It's a beer drinker's thing."

Sherwin adds the United States men made a strong run in the World Cup, last year, and that helped them attract and keep fans coming into their establishment far after the tournament was over, and they hoping for the same results from the women.
