PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Philadelphia’s Mural Arts program will help memorialize the historic, planned visit of Pope Francis to the City of Brotherly Love this September.

Artist Cesar Viveros designed the mural, which will be displayed on the exterior walls of the new St. Malachy School in North Philadelphia.

“The Sacred Now: Faith and Family in the 21st Century” will be painted on multiple mural panels allowing the greater Philadelphia community to come out to eight locations during the next few months to help paint the work.

Jane Golden, executive director of the mural arts program, said engaging the community promotes a sense of ownership.

“If you look at this,” said Golden, “People across the city, the region wherever look at this, they can say I did that and they would be correct.”

The artist, Viveros, said sharing in the creation makes it special.

“I think that every piece of art that is done with the help of all these hands, all these families is very meaningful.”
