Lou Williams Named NBA's Sixth Man Of The Year

By Ray Boyd

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Former Sixers guard Lou Williams has always been seen as a spark plug off the bench for NBA teams. Williams was a valued sixth man for the Sixers, but now he is the NBA's most valued bench player.

On Monday, the NBA announced that Williams had been named the 2015 NBA Sixth Man of the Year for his stellar season with the Toronto Raptors.

Williams averaged 15.5 points per game for the Raptors in 2014-15. That total was the highest of his career. He becomes the first player in Raptors' history to win the award and did so in a season where the Raptors won 49 games which is the most in franchise history.

Williams' play helped to lead the Raptors to a division title and the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference Playoffs.

A very simple tweet was sent out by Williams on Monday after the announcement.

The "6," clearly represents the winning of the award as well as the city of Toronto which often goes by the term "The 6," made popular by rapper, Raptors fan and Toronto native Drake.

Williams received 78 first place votes from the panel of 130 sportswriters that votes for the award. The Celtics' Isaiah Thomas and Jamal Crawford of the Clippers finished second and third respectively.
