'Largest Collegiate Fencing Competition In The World' Happens In Bucks County

By Jim Melwert

BENSALEM, Pa. (CBS) - Get ready to "lunge" and "parry" this weekend. What is billed as the largest collegiate fencing event in the world takes place in Bucks County.

Over 1,000 athletes from over 40 colleges and universities will take part in the U.S. Association of Collegiate Fencing Clubs National Championship at Bensalem High School.

The official hosts of the tournament are Swarthmore College and Liberty Fencing Club in Warrington. Swarthmore coach Marshal Davis says each fencing strip is about 50-feet long and six feet wide, and there will be dozens of them going at all times this weekend:

"On all 45-to-48 of these strips, most of the weekend, there's going to be matches going on. So there are going to be 45-to-48 simultaneously all weekend."

Davis says there's a great viewing area for spectators:

"There's going to be a great viewing area from the second floor, there's a 360-degree track that goes around the gym, that's open so people are going to be able to stand up there and see pretty much everything."

All events are open to the public and there's no charge. The action starts at 8:30 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday. For more information, CLICK HERE.
