PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Tragedy involving children is always tough to cover, and as the father of a six-year old just starting school, the mid-air collision of a helicopter and a small plane carrying Senator John Heinz was particularly heart wrenching.

Wreckage from the plane landed on a school yard in Lower Merion. When I arrived on the scene, 2 small bodies were covered by blankets on the playground.

The children were among 7 people killed. An eyewitness was watching from his City Line office said, “They collided, burst into a ball of flame, and plummeted to earth.”

Anxious parents rushed to the school where the mixed emotions of reunions with their own children and grief for the dead carved a landscape of tragedy and silence.
