Jeremy Maclin Finishes Second For NFL Comeback Player Of The Year

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Jeremy Maclin bet on himself coming into the 2014 season. Following a torn ACL that cost him all of his 2013 season, it was a huge risk for Maclin to play 2014 on a one-year deal.

There was a new coaching staff running the show since the last competitive game that Maclin had played. He was playing with no real security blanket coming off an injury that could have easily reoccurred.

Maclin banked on his ability and his desire to prove himself was on full display throughout 2014. His play on the field will undeniably get him the reward of a long-term contract. It also almost earned him recognition from the NFL.

On the eve of the Super Bowl, the NFL held its NFL Honors Ceremony. The televised event honors the league's top players and was attended by Maclin.

The Eagles wide receiver was nominated for the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year Award. Going from a season in which he didn't play and returning to be his team's most potent offensive threat in the passing game was something that could not have been expected from Maclin.

Maclin entered 2014 after a year off, in a new system, with a new coach and with the responsibility of now being the number one receiver. He rose to the occasion.

Maclin had his best season as a professional in 2014. He caught 85 passes (career-high) for 1,318 yards (career-high) and 10 touchdowns (tied for career-high) on his way to being named an alternate for the Pro Bowl.

On Saturday night, Maclin was beat out for the award by Patriots tight end, and Super Bowl participant, Rob Gronkowski.

The Patriots ultimate weapon only played in seven games in 2013 dealing with issues with his knee. He returned to the field in 2014 and reasserted himself as the best tight end in football.

Gronkowski caught 82 passes for 1,124 yards and 12 touchdowns. The numbers were comparable to Maclin, but very impressive considering the fact Gronkowski plays a position that is a little harder to produce those type of numbers while playing.

Maclin received seven of the possible 50 votes for the award. Gronkowski finished way out in front with 27 votes.

While Maclin may not have won on Saturday night, he is going to get rewarded this off-season anyway. Maclin made the right decision betting on himself.
