Road Crews Out Salting, Brining As Two Storms Approach

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Road crews are out preparing for what's predicted to be a massive onslaught of snow over the next few days.
PennDOT's Gene Blaum says they'll have nearly 400 trucks out salting and brining all the state roads in Philadelphia's five-county PennDOT region:
"PennDOT is prepared and ready for what is going to be from all indications a multi-day winter weather operation."
Officials hope the first clipper system goes by quickly, because Monday night into Tuesday, the true hard work begins.
Blaum says they're closely monitoring the forecast to make sure they have a handle on these storms:
"If we have a heavy accumulating storm, we will be bringing in additional contractors."
Crews began salting earlier in the day Sunday. PennDOT has about 90 tons of salt on-hand and expects to use a whole bunch of it once the snow starts falling.
Blaum adds crews will be on 12-hour shifts and that drivers need to do their part to make sure they are safe on the roads:
"Those who do have to travel in adverse weather conditions should ensure that their vehicle has a full tank of gas, they should ensure that vehicle and their tires are equipped and ready to drive in those type of adverse weather conditions.
Blaum also says as always in weather like this, if you don't need to drive...don't.
