Retailers Look To Cash In On "Super Saturday" Shopping

By Kim Glovas

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Today has been dubbed Super Saturday by retailers, and it is expected to be one of the biggest shopping days of the season. Malls in the Philadelphia area were filled with folks hoping to find those last minute gifts on the final weekend of holiday shopping before Christmas.

Center City streets were mobbed with people heading to Macy's, some to see the light show, and others adventurous enough to brave the maddening crowds heading to the check out counters.

"I have been shopping, taking advantage of the Macy's coupons and sales, and great service staff," said Ruth, who was in the store early Saturday morning and was carrying three very large bags. "I got such deals! Amazing deals, so I'm thrilled."

"It was awesome. Big, big discounts, big, big lines," said Franny. "I waited in line for a half-hour. Everybody is trying to use a coupon on things that are already on sale. Haha!"

Others left the store without bags and seemed very happy about it.

"It's insanity in there right now," said Bernie. "I'm all done with (my shopping), thank God! I finished mine Black Friday. I didn't want to deal with the millions of people."

And he wasn't alone in not wanting to fight the large crowds. Pat Wisniewski and her daughter Colleen were trying to avoid the long lines by staying away from the big stores.

"We're going to the Christmas Village to do a little shopping," Pat said. An idea that was more to her daughter's liking.

"There's lots of handcrafted stuff which is really cool," Colleen explained. That's my kind of stuff."

Retailers are hoping that deep discounts and extended hours leading up to Christmas Eve will help their coffers at years end.
