South Jersey Shore Towns Avert Major Nor'easter Damage

OCEAN CITY, N.J. (CBS) -- Today's nor'easter left a lot of water but not a lot of damage along the South Jersey shore.
Towns had time to prepare for this one, and the storm itself didn't hit as hard as predicted.
"We were drawing some early comparisons to the November 2009 nor'easter, which was about three quarters of a foot above what we just experienced," notes Frank Donato (photo below), emergency management coordinator in Ocean City, NJ. "That would have put us at what they consider to be a ten-year event for nor'easters. So we stayed considerably below that."

Still, there were problems. Several bayside streets were flooded at high tide, along with the entrance to the 9th Street bridge.
But no major damage was reported.
"We reinforced a couple areas," said Donato. "We didn't have any breeches. No water in any homes. So by all accounts, the beaches fared well."
Year-round residents have come to expect weather like this in December. To them it's an inconvenience and little more.
