CANADENSIS, Pa. (CBS) — Pennsylvania State Police say they apprehended a man accused of killing one Pennsylvania State Trooper and wounding another during an ambush.
Eric Frein, 31, was captured by U.S. Marshals that spotted him near an abandoned airplane hangar at Birchwood Pocono Airpark in Pocono Township, Monroe County a little after 6 p.m. Thursday.READ MORE: Preparations Underway For The Salute To America Independence Day Parade In Philadelphia
“They ordered him to surrender, get down on his knees and raise his hands, and that’s what he did,” State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan said.
Authorities say Frein used a high-powered rifle to kill Cpl. Bryon Dickson and wound Trooper Alex Douglass outside the state police barracks in Blooming Grove on September 12th.
The arrest brought a near seven-week manhunt in the heavily wooded areas of northern Pennsylvania to an end.
“The thing that I want to emphasize, the reason this took so long is this is such a big wooded area that he was totally familiar with, that he had a lot of places to hide in, and we had to be very careful with how we searched it,” Noonan said.
Frein was turned over to State Police, who used the handcuffs and patrol car of Corporal Dickson in his arrest.READ MORE: Suspect Arrested Following Fatal Stabbing In Wissahickon: Philadelphia Police
Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett says Frein’s grudge was only with those who wear a badge.
“There were unarmed civilians right in the exact same location during the course of the shooting [at the Blooming Grove barracks], and he chose not to shoot at them,” Corbett said during a September 22nd news conference.
Frein was placed on the FBI’s most wanted list after the deadly ambush.
The Pike County District Attorney says Frein is facing charges including first degree murder, homicide of a law enforcement officer, and attempted murder. The preliminary arraignment is scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday at the Pike County Court House.
The District Attorney said he intends to seek the death penalty in this case.
