Local And Federal Agencies Team Up To Make Philadelphia A Safer Place For Pedestrian And Bicyclists

By Justin Udo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia gets more than half of a million dollars to help boost pedestrian and bicyclists safety.

Last year 34 pedestrians in Philadelphia died after being struck by vehicles.

"Clearly the issue here is about paying attention whether you're walking or biking or driving."

The city's deputy mayor for transportation Rina Cutler says a $500,000 grant from the federal government will let the city and PennDOT expand pedestrian safety education and enforcement efforts.

"This program is specifically working to change the culture and the attitude of Philadelphians towards traffic safety."

Cutler says the new initiatives include developing new warning forms for pedestrians during peak times and a heavier focus and distracted drivers.
