Attorneys See 30-Percent Increase In Pet Custody Disputes During U.S. Divorces

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Attorneys in the United States say they have seen a 30-percent spike in pet disputes when their owners decide it's time to go their separate ways.

We all know that relationships don't always go as planned, but too often, pets are caught in the middle when their owners file for divorce.

According to the law, pets are not treated as a member of the family, but rather as property.

One pet lover spent almost $11,000 in legal fees to keep her dog "Sweetpea."

"Letting go of a house or retirement funds or money, I can deal with that. But letting go of my dog, I couldn't part with her."

Experts suggest trying to settle the pet dispute outside of court to save money in the long run.

Another suggestion: you can consider adding a pet clause to your prenuptial agreement before you walk down the aisle.
