Camden County Police Department's Success Has Not Translated Into Interest In The Rest Of The Country

By David Madden

CAMDEN, NJ (CBS) -- The Camden County Police Department has been in place for a couple years now and the city of Camden remains the lone participant in the regionalization effort. Not that the county isn't trying to branch out.

Freeholder Director Lou Cappelli points with pride to Camden's lower crime rate and more boots on the ground in town, but hopes were to get other municipalities involved and that hasn't happened. He says two towns are considering coming on board. He won't identify them. So what's the holdup?

"They're assessing whether or not it makes sense for their town to do it. Secondly the process itself is a time consuming process. It's not like you can just flip a switch and make the change."

Another potential hurdle? Labor contracts. Camden's former police union fought the change tooth and nail. Cappelli believes other towns won't present the same level of a challenge, assuming one actually steps up.
