PHS Festival Aims To Help Gardeners Keep Their Plants Growing In Fall

By Justin Udo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society is helping gardeners make the transition from summer to fall during a festival for people looking to ripen their green thumb.

As part of their annual Fall Festival Saturday at the Navy Yard, PHS hosted workshops and had vendors available to give folks tips on how to keep their gardens longer as autumn approaches.

"Fall is the perfect time to be planting trees and shrubs," says Alan Jaffe with PHS. "There are certain vegetables that are perfect for putting in this time of year. They like the cooler weather."

Jaffe says those vegetables include favorites like radishes, cauliflower, lettuce.

If you missed Saturday's festival, there is no need to fret. You can visit their website and ask any garden related question and get advice from an expert.

"You'll learn about what kind of plants are best for your particular garden," explains Jaffe "You'll learn how to plant it. If you are looking for your house plants, as we get the colder weather soon, you'll learn how to take care of your orchids and other plants for indoors.

Jaffe adds even though fall is synonymous with the harvest, planting should not be forgotten.
