PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Philadelphia Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a suspect who was caught on camera using a banana hidden inside his sweatshirt to rob a market.

The incident, caught on surveillance video, happened around 9:15 a.m. Tuesday on the 3800 block of Poplar Street in Philadelphia’s East Parkside neighborhood.

Philadelphia Police say when the man approached the counter, he had his right hand in his hooded sweatshirt acting as if he had a handgun in his pocket, demanding money and cigarettes.

Police say the suspect allegedly took an undetermined amount of money and fled on a bicycle. He was last seen on 40th Street towards Wyalusing Avenue.

“He then gets onto his bike and peels away on that bike, so we’re asking for the public’s help,” Philadelphia Police Lt. John Walker said.

Upon viewing the store surveillance video, police say it was determined that the suspect picked up a banana from the counter and placed it inside his sweatshirt, simulating it as a weapon.

“We’re fearful this male may continue on doing further robberies and he did put these people in fear because they cannot tell what the item was when he demanded money and claimed he had a gun,” Lt. Walker said.

The suspect is described by police as a Black male, 5’9-5’11″, 140 pounds, with a thin build.  He was wearing a tan hooded sweatshirt with “Pacific Coast Hollister 19″ on the front in red lettering and black pants.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Philadelphia Police at 215-686-TIPS (8477) or text a tip to PPD TIP or 773847 or submit a tip at PhillyPolice.com.
