Study Could Clear Way For Restoration Of Discounts On Delaware River Bridge Tolls

By Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A Delaware River Port Authority committee has green-lighted a traffic study that could lead to toll discounts for Delaware River Bridge commuters.

The traffic study will help to determine whether the DRPA can afford to restore its toll discounts for frequent users of its four bridges. The $1 discounts were phased out in 2011. DRPA CEO John Hanson says the thinking is, the agency is in better financial shape now and its steadiest customers deserve a break from the current $5 toll.

"The DRPA's financial performance has been exceptional over the last few years," he says, "and that there may be a possibility to reflect some of that in the way we charge our steadiest customers."

But Hanson says it's far from certain.

"The board will have to talk about it," he says. "There has not been full consensus of the board at this point to do this."

The study should get the full board's okay next week and should take six to eight weeks to complete.

Hanson says if the board approves, it's possible the discounts could be back in place by the end of the calendar year.
