Local School Districts Preparing For Potential Enterovirus 68 Spread

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The CDC says more than 80 people have been infected with the dangerous Enterovirus D68, or EV-D68, in six different states. Twelve children in Delaware are being tested for the disease, and school districts across the country are doing what they can to prepare for the new virus.
"It seems pretty inevitable it would move," says Terry Quinlan, the supervisor of health services for the Lower Merion School District.
There are no confirmed cases in Pennsylvania, but that could change.
"A couple of weeks ago, we started to look at our custodial products, for example, to make sure that these are effective against this enterovirus, and we upped our placement of hand sanitizing station and made sure they're filled, and we are going to provide information to parents," Quinlan adds.
She says hand-washing is the most effective way to prevent most communicable diseases, including Enterovirus D68.
