Food Sensitivities And Allergies May Be Identified By Process Of Elimination

By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The concept has been around for a while but it is just gaining traction. So called 'elimination diets' can be helpful in conditions such as food allergies, food sensitivities, and irritable bowel syndrome (ibs).

In an elimination diet, you cut out a food or foods that may be causing you symptoms. You then add the foods back one by one and see how you feel.

If your symptoms appear, you have a good idea that the food may be linked to your troubles. Don't hesitate to get advice. Talk with your doctor about which foods you should avoid.

The foods you eliminate depend on your condition. For example, people with ibs may want to avoid dairy, tomatoes, alcohol and caffeine.

Another part of the process is to introduce foods back into your diet one at a time. It is a great way to take an active role in your care.
